General President

Dr. Barbara Louise Shaw is the General President Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society Of The African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Dr. Shaw was born in Wilmington, North Carolina. Her spiritual development was in the Pennsylvania Avenue A.M.E. Zion Church, Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Shaw was educated in the public schools in Baltimore; Morgan State University; Notre Dame College; and graduate studies at The Johns Hopkins University, School of Writing.

Professionally, she has served as a teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System; a producer with Maryland Public Television; and a prison administrator with the State of Maryland, where she retired after 30 years of service. In August 2003, Ms. Shaw was elected the 16th International President of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. In this position, Dr. Shaw presides over 800,000 women on five continents.

The WHOMS is managed through an Executive Board which consists of 24 members that serves as the Executive Committee. This Board is led by the general president, with the assistance of a first and second vice president, an executive secretary, treasurer, recording secretary, twelve missionary supervisors each appointed by the Bishop of an Episcopal District and six departments that form an intergenerational bridge for mission participation, from preschoolers to senior adults. These christian churchwomen seek excellence in the LORD as they look beyond traditional methods of service to create innovative approaches for kingdom building nationally and internationally.

The Executive Board by its Constitution has the authority to make rules and regulations governing the Society consistent with hose specified in the Book of Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. It also has the power to fill vacancies of elected officers during the interim of the Quadrennial Convention. The Executive Board does not have the authority to make constitutional changes.
