Bishop McCoy is a graduate of Livingstone College and the Hood Theological Seminary. He also received a Doctor of Divinity degree from Hood Theological Seminary in 1981



His pastorates include; First AME Zion Church - Brooklyn, NY; East Stonewall AME Zion Church - Charlotte, NC; Price Memorial AME Zion Church – Concord, NC; Mt. Zion – Roper Grove AME Zion Circuit – Mt. Gilead, NC. Bishop McCoy was elected the 94th bishop of the AME Zion Church at the 47th General Conference, 2004



Bishop McCoy has held positions with the AME Zion Connectional Budget Board, AME Zion Church Episcopal Committee; Chairman, New York Conference Board of Trustees; Chairman, New York Conference Budget Committee; Chairman, New York City District Finance Committee; Member and Chairman, Board of Directors, Harriet Tubman Home, Inc.
