Theme: "Preparing Disciples to Make Disciples".

The Book of Discipline of our Church directs that every Sunday Church School shall emphasize “Decision Day” annually in the month of October. It further directs that each Sunday Church School should undertake an evangelistic quota for active membership. In the recent past the Decision Day Observance has also been an opportunity for the local churches to share financial gifts in support of the Department of Church and Development: Evangelism – Home Mission – Church Extension.

While financial gifts will be welcomed during this observance, the department is placing its greatest emphasis upon decisions for Christ. The 2012-2016 Quadrennial Theme:” Fortifying Our Faith, While Focusing on Our Future Through: Worship, Leadership, Discipleship and Stewardship” serves as a guide for our evangelistic endeavors.

Christian Discipleship is more than our theme, it is a mandate from Christ. The ministry of making Christian disciples includes Evangelizing the world with a Christ-centered gospel; Initiating Converts into a Christ-Centered Church; Teaching Believers to Obey Christ’s Commands and finally, Training Christian Disciples to Make Christian Disciples. Our theme for Decision Day 2013 is “Preparing Disciples to Make Disciples.”

A vital step in the disciple making process is that of training disciples to make disciples. Disciple making is a cycle that is not complete until the individual who has been disciple d is equipped and empowered to disciple others. This is exactly what the Apostle Paul says to Timothy, his son in the ministry, “and what you have heard from me through many witnesses entrust to faithful people who will be able to teach others as well.” (2 Timothy 2:2 NRSV) The church must not only make disciples, it must prepare disciple makers to continue the process. Only then, can the church be assured that disciple making will be ongoing.

The first century Jews had a blessing that beautifully expresses the commitment of a disciple to follow his spiritual mentor: “May you always be covered by the dust of your rabbi.” That is, “May you follow him so closely that the dust his feet kick up is what cakes your clothing and lines your face.”Since the Church of Jesus the Christ has been charged with the responsibility of making Christian disciples, we need to explore more deeply the meaning of Christian Discipleship, discover the essential elements; identify and examine the distinguishing marks of a true disciple of Christ as well as study and implement the dynamics of disciple-making as the true mission of the Church. Decision Day is rooted and grounded in the quest to see our members, children, youth and adults move beyond religion and ritual to authentic relationship with God through Jesus Christ. While still targeting our youth and children, the Decision Day Observance must broaden its scope in order to reach people of all ages who are in need of making a life-changing decision for Christ.
