Bishop James E. McCoy Passes - November 13, 2012

Bishop James E. McCoy, presiding prelate of the Eastern North Carolina Episcopal District of the A.M.E. Zion Church and the 94th bishop in succession, elected at the 47th Quadrennial in 2004, passed on Tuesday, November 13, 2012. He is survived by his wife Mrs. Shirley M. McCoy, three children and two grandchildren. Born April 16, 1944, Bishop McCoy attended Livingstone College and the Hood Theological Seminary where he received his Doctor of Divinity degree in 1981.

His pastorates include; First AME Zion Church - Brooklyn, NY; East Stonewall AME Zion Church - Charlotte, NC; Price Memorial AME Zion Church – Concord, NC; Mt. Zion – Roper Grove AME Zion Circuit – Mt. Gilead, NC. Bishop McCoy has held positions with the AME Zion Connectional Budget Board, AME Zion Church Episcopal Committee; Chairman, New York Conference Board of Trustees; Chairman, New York Conference Budget Committee; Chairman, New York City District Finance Committee; Member and Chairman, Board of Directors, Harriet Tubman Home, Inc.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the Varick Auditorium on the campus of Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Services will be at 11:00 o’clock a.m. with a viewing from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to the Hood Theological Seminary Refectory Project.

Professional Funeral Services are being provided by Long and Sons Mortuary, Charlotte, North Carolina.
