The Importance of Thanksgiving
The Bible speaks of Thanksgiving in many scriptures. As I searched through the scriptures, I was struck that we are commanded to give thanks in every situation and circumstance. Here are few examples:

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18

And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Colossians 3:15-17

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

As I read scripture after scripture, it made me wonder why we would be admonished to give thanks so often and in every situation. Then I read Romans 1:21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

It became clear that giving thanks is admonished because:

  • Thanksgiving honors God.

  • Thanksgiving reminds us that we serve a Mighty God.

  • We are reminded to give thanks in every situation because it points us back to the Father our source for all that we need.

  • Thanksgiving keeps our thinking from becoming futile, and our hearts from being darkened. This truth is a knockout punch to the enemy.

Thanksgiving is one of the easiest things we can do to turn our thinking around from a downward spiral to an instant Joy fest. No matter the situation, the way to combat these issues is THANKSGIVING!

As the Thanksgiving Season approaches, be reminded that Thanksgiving is important in our lives daily. Thanksgiving shows our appreciation to God but it also keeps us mindful of God’s powerful presence in our lives as Christians. It keeps our thinking from becoming futile, our lives from being ineffective, and our hearts from darkness. So today I admonish you to Be Grateful! Get started right now.
