Rev. Kathryn G. Brown
Secretary
An ordained elder, experienced trainer, and innovative leader, Rev. Kathryn Gertrude Brown serves as the General Secretary of the Christian Education Department. Succeeding a line of dynamic leaders, Rev. Brown was elected in July, 2012 at the 48th Quadrennial Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. She is honored to be the first female to hold this position.
Born and raised in Harlem, NY, Rev. Brown was educated in the New York City Public School System. She rejoices in every opportunity to dispel negative myths about life in Harlem. Rev. Brown earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Relations from Salem College in Salem, West, Virginia and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning in Baltimore, MD.
God has been equipping Rev. Brown for a higher level of service in Christian Education for many, many years. While growing up in Mother A.M.E. Zion Church in New York and being nurtured in Christian Education by her Youth Director, Mr. Dabney Montgomery, and the Conference Director of Christian Education, the late Mrs. DeVera Johnson-Lockhart, Rev. Brown began developing a zeal for Christian Education.
As a young adult, Rev. Brown was appointed Youth Director at Contee A.M.E. Zion Church in Washington, DC. Her experiences in ministry to youth led her to fully commit her life to Christ and increased her passion for Christian Education. Following several productive years in youth work, Rev. Brown was appointed District Director of Young Adults. Through these experiences, her God-given gift for organizing innovative, transformational ministries was recognized.
In May 1999, Rev. Brown received an appointment from the late Bishop Milton A. Williams, to serve as the Conference Director of Christian Education for the Philadelphia and Baltimore Conference. During her tenure she became the first salaried Conference Director of Christian Education in the Philadelphia-Baltimore Conference. In 2004, Bishop Warren M. Brown, appointed her to serve as the Episcopal Director of Christian Education for the Mid-Atlantic II Episcopal District.
Rev. Brown’s work at the Connectional level began when she was asked by Rev. Dr. W. Darin Moore (now Bishop Moore), to serve as the Program Coordinator for this newly formed ministry for young adults. After serving in this capacity for several years, Rev. Dr. Raymon Hunt, (Rev. Brown’s predecessor) invited her to join the staff of the Christian Education Department as the Program Coordinator. Serving under Rev. Dr. Hunt for over 16 years uniquely positions Rev. Brown to lead the Department during this season.
A woman who considers herself richly blessed by God, Rev. Brown is especially grateful for the love of her parents, and the mentoring of exceptionally gifted men and women of God. Two of the highlights of her life are being a godmother of four and nurturing the numerous young people that God has entrusted to her care.
