 Born: October 8, 1933 Married: Mrs. Shanna Marshall Children: One child, three grandchildren  Bishop Strickland is a graduate of Livingstone College, where he received a B.A. degree. He earned a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Hood Theological Seminary; M.A. degree from Vanderbilt University; D. Min from St. Mary’s Ecumenical Institute and a Ph.D. from St. Mary’s University. Bishop Strickland is author of Kennedy: The Dreamer (1967) and “How Big Is Your God?” Pulpit Digest (1959).  His pastorates included Patton Memorial, Chattanooga, Tennessee; David Stand, Lancaster, South Carolina; Hood Memorial, Bristol, Tennessee; Big Zion, Mobile, Alabama and Pennsylvania Avenue Church, Baltimore, Maryland. He was elected 88th Bishop in succession in the AME Zion Church on July 31, 1992 and retired from service July, 2004.  He served in leadership positions on several boards of the A. M. E. Zion Church and with ecumenical organizations, representing the Church and mankind. Some included, Secretary, Board of Bishops, chair, Brotherhood Pension Service Board; chair, Consultation on Church Union; appointee, World Council of Churches; 2nd Vice Chairman, The Year 2000 General Conference Committee and chair, Compilation Committee. In retirement, Bishop Strickland has allowed the exhilaration, intoxication and liberation of the freedom from the enormous administrative responsibilities of the episcopacy to take his ministry in a multitude of places and areas of life that he was not able to pursue with a passion until now. |
