With challenges seeming insurmountable in Nigerian Missionary enterprise, Bishop Samuel Chukukanne Ekemam, Sr. took them on in a way that spirited great expansion through efforts in reaching the hurting, lost, desolate, mistreated, needy and downtrodden. His proactive purpose-driven approach and passionate mandate to his subordinates introduced and ignited new converts to Christ and to the church. He remains a respected voice, often, lone voice, on issues of social justice, social service, education, and good governance.

Bishop Ekemam have been reaching out to this great Connectional Church with a compassionate message to proactively take on the efforts of Bishop Clinton's mandate through church planting and new church development in Zion. Bishop Ekemam insists that cultivating the mission to "expand the work and organize new conferences", is a disciplinary duty and constitutional mandate of a bishop as enshrined in the 2004 Book of Discipline.

Bishop Ekemam was born in Ogwa, Imo State, Nigeria and has a passion for his people and his church. By the grace of God and sheer hard work and self-less service Bishop Ekemam has recorded an unprecedented feat by giving to Zion Connection eight new Annual conferences in one region in one stay. They are: (1) Lagos-West Nigeria organized in 1990; (2) Mainland Nigeria organized in 1992; (3) Northern Nigeria organized in 1995; (4) Cross River Nigeria organized in 1998; (5) South-Eastern Nigeria organized in 2000; (6) Southern Nigeria organized in 2000 (7) Akwa Nigeria organized in 2007 and (8) Port Harcourt Nigeria organized in January 2010. And all received into the Zion Methodist Connection.

He presently presides over all the eleven Annual Conferences of the Eastern West Africa Episcopal District made up of the original three, Nigeria, Rivers, and Central Nigeria and the above mentioned eight which he organized.

He spear-headed the building of the of the Area Headquarters in Owerri, Nigeria as well as the Hood-Speaks Theological Seminary in Ndon Ebom, Nigeria, both of which are sources of pride to Zion.

Bishop Ekemam was educated in Nigeria and in America. And earned an A.A. Degree from Clinton Junior College, B.A. Degree from Livingstone College and Graduate degrees in Divinity from Yale University, New Haven; in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City, post-graduate studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York City and served as Adjunct at New York Theological Seminary.

Bishop Ekemam is a recipient of numerous honours and awards including Honorary Doctorate degrees, D.D. from Clinton; DHL from Livingstone and LL.D from Hood-Speaks. He was among three Nigerian Church denominational leaders awarded national honours in 2002 by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Member Order of the Niger (M.O.N.).

Bishop Ekemam serves on the National Executive of the Christian Association of Nigeria, C.A.N., the World Methodist Council, among several.

He is married to Mrs. Stella Adannaya Ekemam and is the father of seven children, and grand father of four.

N.B.: Bishop Ekemam was elected bishop in 1988 and assigned to Liberia and Nigeria.
